He wasn’t supposed to be ours, but once he was, there was no going back.
Cowboy came out of the Animal Defense League during the chaos following Hurricane Harvey—one of many dogs displaced, renamed, and waiting for a second shot.
The day my toddler daughter and I walked through the kennels, we weren’t even sure we were ready to adopt.
Dogs were barking. Jumping. Trying to get our attention.
And then there he was.
Just sitting there.
Calm.
Like, “what’s up?”
I kept going back to his kennel.
Not because he was trying to get picked—but because he wasn’t.
Back then, his name was Glen Campbell.
And yes—that’s exactly where the name Cowboy came from---Glen Campbell’s song “Rhinestone Cowboy.”
The name stuck. It fit. And once it did, there was no going back. He became an important part of our family.
He came to us already house-trained. Already neutered. Already knew how to behave.
Like someone had done everything right—and then somehow still lost him. We are still forever grateful to the ADL and to the family who had him first, wherever they are.
He fit in instantly with our family but it took him several weeks to realize he was allowed on the couch.
He was always a protector of the kids—not aggressive, just present with that quiet, shepherd kind of watchfulness. Calm. Patient. Unbothered by toddlers climbing all over him.
When it was time to play—he showed up. And when you talked to him, that little nub tail would start going fast. His whole back end shakes with it.
He was part of everything. 5Ks. Turkey trots. Walks that turned into routines. Wherever we were going, he was going too.
Cowboy had his wild side too---chasing birds., after bunny rabbits. Exploring the wooded land behind the house like it was his job.
We had space—quiet, no traffic—and permission to roam. So he did.
One day he came back with two little quills stuck in the tip of his nose. Just two. Like even that had limits.
Everything changed after he was attacked by another dog. It was sudden. Violent. We didn’t think he was going to make it through the night. But he did.
What followed were weeks of recovery--Bandages. Care. Watching him closely. Making sure he kept eating. Making sure he kept going.
And that’s when it hit—what we were feeding him didn’t feel like enough anymore.
So we started cooking for him.
Not in a factory. Not in a lab.
In a kitchen.
Real meat. Real vegetables. Food we actually believed in.
And he responded. He is a healthy, sweet senior dog, and he is most definitely the Bestest Good Boy.
This is Bean. He is a Crested Gecko. He is unable to enjoy BGB fresh food as he is not a Dog. He is however my Youngest Child's Bestest Good Boy and I promised her he could be on the page too.
Fun fact about the Crested or "Eyelash Gecko....They can and will lick their own eyeball for hydration.
